Bergman, but not the one you have probably seen. This one is shorter, and quieter, and almost entirely set in a single house in winter. There is one phone call. That is the plot.
Mungiu. A Romanian film about a hospital visit that takes nearly the entire night. Almost no music. Almost no movement. Watch what the corridor does.
Kaurismäki, who is the only Finnish director most people can name, with reason. A man, a woman, a dog, very little dialogue. I will not pretend it is not melancholic. It is also funny in a way that surprised me when I was twenty.
